Shark mitigation

We are involved in both operational responses and research initiatives as part of a suite of shark mitigation strategies. To lead this effort, a Shark Response Unit has been established to research shark populations and movements, improve response lans and provide advice and information to ocean users.

We are partnering with other stakeholders such as Surf Life Saving WA to develop new strategies to reduce the risk of shark encounters and increase safety for beach goers and ocean users.

We are also undertaking additional research into sharks and overseeing the development of a community engagement strategy to improve public safety and raise awareness of shark response and alert procedures.

The initiatives we put in place make sure response agencies can close beaches and the community can stay informed about sightings. In the longer term, the world class research programs we have put in place will help us understand the behaviour of sharks, and implement better programs and interventions to keep people safe.
