West Coast Bioregion demersal fishing closure

Recreational fishing for demersal scalefish in the West Coast Bioregion, from Kalbarri to Augusta, closes today, 1 February, until 31 March (inclusive).

The closure has been put in place following extensive community and industry consultation to help boost recovery of our iconic and much prized demersal scalefish stocks.

Any demersal fish caught unintentionally during the closure need to be immediately and carefully returned to the water – but it doesn’t mean you can’t fish – you can still switch your catch by going fishing for non-demersal species.

As well as the closure, new rules also came into effect from today. These include changes to bag and boat limits; removal of size limits for some species and gear restrictions. For more information, check the Recreational fishing guide.
