Call FishWatch if you see any suspicious fishing activity

To help ensure there will be plenty of fish for the future, please call our FishWatch phone number on 1800 815 507 as soon as possible to report any illegal fishing activity you see.

The information you provide will be immediately SMS’d to all Fisheries Officers in that area who will respond if they have available personnel. We strongly recommend you do not approach anyone you think is involved in illegal fishing activity.

Illegal fishing could include someone netting in the river, exceeding their bag or possession limits, taking undersize fish, fishing in a closed area, having more fishing gear in the water than they should, or selling or attempting to sell recreationally caught fish. Any report you make is treated in strict confidence.

Before you call please make a note of the following:

  • Any car or boat registrations associated with the people who are illegally fishing.
  • How many people you saw.
  • Who they were? Did you hear/know any of their names?
  • What they were doing?
  • Where it happened - the nearest known landmark or intersection of the closest road may help to pinpoint the location of the activity.
  • What type of equipment you saw being used - the type of cars or boats and descriptions.
  • When it happened - time and date. Is it something that is happening right now, while you are making a report, or was it something you observed previously?
  • The nature of the illegal fishing activity.

Past reports made to FishWatch have resulted in successful apprehensions, so by reporting to Fishwatch you’re helping to protect our valuable fisheries and aquatic resources.

If you don’t wish to contact us through FishWatch you can pass your information to one of our local offices during office hours.

For more information about legal/illegal fishing activity see our recreational fishing rules or download our recreational fishing guide.
