Red tape reduction for recfishing rules will boost WA tourism

    • ​Recreationally-caught fish can now be stored and cooked at commercial premises that provide accommodation and meals
    • The new rules will open up tourism opportunities for guests at resorts and on charters
    • It remains an offence to sell or barter recreationally-caught fish

Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly has today announced relaxed rules to allow tourists and locals on holiday in Western Australia to get their recreationally caught fish cooked up by a chef in their accommodation’s restaurant or kitchen.

To enhance recfishing tourism opportunities and experiences, fishing regulations have now been amended to allow some accommodation outlets to store and cook recreationally caught fish on behalf of their guests. 

These changes apply provided the owner of the fish is staying in the accommodation at the time and the fish are clearly labelled with the owner’s name, and the fish is prepared for the owner of it. Accommodation premises will not be able to on-sell the fish or parts of it to other patrons.

The possession of recreationally caught fish, including crustaceans like rock lobsters, crabs, abalone and marron, was previously prohibited at all commercial premises that deal with the commercial storage or sale of seafood.
