Celebrating 50 years of the Pemberton hatchery's benefits for WA

    • Pemberton Freshwater Research Centre marks its Golden Anniversary
    • McGowan Government committed to maintaining WA's freshwater fishing stocks
    • State stocking programs delivering quality recreational trout fishing experiences
Pemberton's Freshwater Research Centre is celebrating 50 years of State Government support for freshwater fisheries.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's (DPIRD) research centre is Western Australia's largest freshwater hatchery and research facility, supporting our trout fishery and the broader freshwater aquaculture industry.

Trout breeding in the hatchery is the lifeblood of freshwater fishing in WA, putting more legal-sized rainbow and brown trout in the right place at the right time to enhance the fishing experience for nearly 10,000 anglers.

Each year, fishers and family groups take fishing holidays in the south to catch trout, contributing more than $20 million to regional businesses and local economies in the Peel, South-West and Great Southern regions.

A commemorative book, A Brief History of the Pemberton Trout Hatchery, has been released today to recognise the hatchery's connection to trout fishing history in WA.

The McGowan Government is also supporting the hatchery to look to the future with plans to design a climate-controlled broodstock and yearling grow out system to address climate variability and secure future trout production.

Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Don Punch:

"The McGowan Government is helping to create more enjoyable freshwater fishing experiences through the great work of the aquaculture team at DPIRD's Pemberton Hatchery, as it celebrates its Golden Anniversary.

"I've enjoyed being involved in the release of some huge hatchery-bred trout during Troutfest in recent years and I know what a fun challenge the big fish present for recreational fishers.

"I congratulate the staff at the Pemberton Freshwater Research Centre as they mark this important occasion and thank Recfishwest and the WA Inland Fishery Research Advisory Committee for their commitment to enhancing trout fishing experiences and supporting the hatchery and our vibrant freshwater fishery."

Comments attributed to Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie:

"Congratulations to the team at the Pemberton Freshwater Research Centre on this Golden Anniversary.

"The important research undertaken at the Pemberton hatchery is critical to the success of WA's freshwater fishing industry and experiences.

"Trout fishing holidays are fun, educational, and memorable. These trips help stimulate local economies in the southern part of our State and encourage repeat visitation to our wonderful destinations."
