TAC Total Allowable Catch
TACC Total Allowable Commercial Catch
TAE Total Allowable Effort
TARC Total Allowable Recreational Catch
Target catch Catch that has been selected by species or size. Generally the highest ‘value' catch available. Value can be determined in terms of dollar return, size, eating or sportfish quality, or social significance.
TED Turtle Exclusion Device
Temporal closure Closure over time, for example a seasonal closure.
Territorial sea   The area of sea adjacent to Australia which extends beyond its land territory and internal waters. Australia's territorial sea extends 12 nautical miles from the baseline.
Trap fishing Fishing by means of traps, often designed to catch a particular species, e.g. rock lobster pots.
Trash fish An expression sometimes used by fishers to describe discarded catch that has no commercial value.
Trophic Predator-prey relationships. Connected with nutrition and feeding.
Trawling A variety of fishing operations in which nets are towed behind a boat to sweep the water. The nets may be set to fish at different depths, depending on the target species (see demersal trawling).
Trolling A fishing method in which lines with baits or lures are dragged by a vessel at a speed of 2-10 knots. Trolling is used Australia-wide to catch fish such as Spanish mackerel, yellowtail kingfish and several tuna species.
UNCLOS United Nations Convention of Law of the Sea
Under-exploited A fish stock that has potential to sustain catches higher than those currently taken.

Wetfishing Any fishery or fishing activity which targets cartilaginous fish and finfish, for example the Shark Bay Snapper Managed Fishery, the Southern Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Fishery and WA's ‘open access' commercial fishery.
Wetfish Cartilaginous (for example sharks and rays) and scale fish or finfish (for example dhufish, and snapper).
Wetlining Fishing activities for which there are no restrictions on the number of commercially licensed fishing vessels with access.

WRLDA Western Rock Lobster Development Association
Year class Fish spawned in the same season.
