How to Keep Native Freshwater Crayfish

Food
One of the most important things to avoid when raising freshwater crayfish is overfeeding. The uneaten food will pollute the water causing the crayfish to die. Feeding them lumps of meat is particularly bad. The best food is pesticide-free crayfish or marron pellets, made from a mixture of grains, fish and blood meal. If not available, trout pellets will suffice, as will most aquarium pellets designed to sink, not float. Earthworms are also a suitable food if washed first to avoid the introduction of disease. They can be eaten immediately, they will not pollute the water and they can be grown and bred as a separate project.
