How to Keep Native Freshwater Crayfish

Overcrowding
Several young freshwater crayfish or a couple of adults can be kept for many months in a tank as long as they are not overfed. Ideally, stock no more than one to three small animals per metre squared of water. In small fish tanks there's not much room so only stock 1 or 2 crayfish.

The density of marron in a tank is expressed in m2 rather than m3 as unlike fish they live on the bottom, rather than in the water column. Therefore m2 - the length and breadth of the tank - is vital.

Overcrowding will pollute the water

Overcrowding will pollute the water. The creatures may also become stressed as they compete for food and space. Talk to your aquarium store owner about the water volume of your tank.
