How to Keep Native Freshwater Crayfish

Tank Set Up
Freshwater crayfish love to climb so it is a good idea to place a lid (glass or perspex) on the top of the tank. The lid will also protect the animals from harmful substances such as fly spray which you should try not to use near your Aquarium. Place a stone or hollow log in the water, especially if it is quite deep.

Freshwater crayfish love to climb

The stone or log should have a rough surface so the crayfish can grip and climb. This will allow the animals to come out of the water or come to the surface when they wish. Keep water snails (available from aquarium shops) to eat algae and stop your aquarium from turning green. They may not last long as your crays will eat these too.

Watch the freshwater crayfish carefully for signs of distress or lack of balance. If this occurs talk to your aquarium store keeper.
