How to Keep Native Freshwater Crayfish

Filters
Freshwater crayfish can be easily kept in an indoor aquarium. The best set up is one that has an ‘undergravel filter’ on the bottom of the glass tank.

The filter is a plastic plate with holes, that sits just off the bottom of the tank. It is covered with fibreglass mesh that supports a layer of gravel.

The plate has one or more airlift tubes. A small blower provides a stream of air bubbles up the tubes to pump and circulate the tank water through the gravel bed.

A range of filter and air equipment can be found in any aquarium shop. An undergravel filter will cost between approximately $10 - $50 depending on the size of the tank.
