Thelohania
- a threat to freshwater crayfish.
Freshwater
crayfish, such as marron and yabbies, can become ill
like any other animal. Thelohania is one of the diseases
that affects freshwater crayfish. This disease is
caused by a very tiny parasite, that you would need
a microscope to see. The parasite affects the muscles
of the crayfish and eventually kills the animal. The
disease is spread by healthy crayfish eating infected
crayfish. Most of the time it is hard to tell the
difference between a healthy and an infected crayfish.
The
disease doesn’t make people ill, even if they eat
an infected crayfish.
People
can help stop the disease from spreading.
