How to Keep Native Freshwater Crayfish

Signs of Stress
Stress may be caused by the following reasons:

Changes in the Levels of Oxygen
When oxygen levels fall freshwater crayfish will:

  • stop general activity and become slow and sleepy;
  • lose their ability to flick the tail;
  • spread the tail fan;
  • hold the chest up on an angle;
  • move the swimmerets vigorously;
  • try to climb out of the tank or
  • die

Changes in Water Temperature

  • When the temperatures fall the crayfish become slow and sleepy
  • When the temperatures are too high, the crayfish become restless and will move back and forth.

Overcrowding

If threatened, the animal will raise its claws. If the threat continues it will flick its tail forwards and dart backwards and upwards to escape.
