A total ban on the use of hide baits in both the commercial and recreational rock lobster fisheries has been introduced after concerns about threats to overseas markets.
The ban extends to both commercial and recreational fishers to ensure that no rock lobster taken by a commercial operator has previously been exposed to bovine, hide or hair-covered baits.
Under the regulations, a person must not fish for rock lobster using as bait, or carry on board a boat for use as rock lobster bait
a) any bovine matter (excluding gelatine & tallow - artificial baits);
b) any animal skin or hide; or
c) any thing to which any mammal skin or hide is attached.
The maximum penalty for an offence is $10,000 and additional penalties provided in Sections 222 and 224 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994.
