Fishing in Marine Parks

There are a number of Marine Parks in Western Australia.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is responsible for the day-to-day management of the parks and the Department of Fisheries is responsible for managing recreational and commercial fishing within the parks.

In general, there are specific restrictions on recreational and commercial fishing and collecting activities for each marine park.

All marine parks are zoned for different uses. Within each marine park, there is likely to be a number of zones, where ALL fishing and collecting, both commercial and recreational, is prohibited.

The location of these zones for each marine park can be obtained from the Department of Environment and Conservation, which has a wealth of information on marine parks in brochure form and on its website. In some cases, maps showing the locations of these zones within a particular marine park can be downloaded from the DEC website.

Fishing rules apply in all marine parks. The rules appropriate to a particular marine park can be found in the Department of Fisheries' ‘Recreational Fishing Guide' for the region in which the marine park is located. In addition, in the case of most marine parks, there is some supplementary information, located on the Department of Fisheries web site.
