Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre

If you are interested in fishing or the aquatic environment, or you are a school teacher, tertiary lecturer or student, a visit to the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre (NMDC) provides the perfect destination.

The NMDC is our public education facility. Located at Hillarys Boat Harbour, the NMDC offers informative and entertaining displays and hands-on activities covering Western Australia's aquatic life, fisheries and the science behind the management of the aquatic environment.

The NMDC is suitable for a wide range of audiences, including  school groups, tertiary institutions, service clubs and other community groups.

Parents have told us it provides a perfect destination for the school holidays. Our regular holiday programs and activities are always very popular.

For more information, book a group visit or school holiday program or to sign up for our regular newsletter visit the NMDC website.

Teacher professional learning

The NMDC education staff can provide tailored professional development courses for your teaching and support staff, for either a few hours or a whole day. Contact our education staff for further information.

Teachers are also welcome to attend our regular afternoon sessions to learn how excursions to the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre can complement activities from Marine WATERs, our online teaching resource.

You may also be interested in attending one of the following annual professional development opportunities. They provide great ways to meet like-minded educators and to discover more about developments in marine education.

Seaweek Educators’ Expo

Seaweek is the Marine Education Society of Australasia’s major annual education campaign to increase understanding and appreciation of the ocean and its living organisms.

Seaweek Educators’ Expo is a one-day professional learning workshop for teachers and educators, hosted at the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre.

The workshop offers a range of hands-on marine education activities linked to the Seaweek theme. For further information, visit the NMDC website.

Catchments, Corridors and Coasts

Catchments, Corridors and Coasts is a  three-day professional development program that provides a snapshot of environmental education in WA from catchments, through corridors to the coast.

Snorkelling in the ocean, walking in the bush, getting up close and personal with native fauna, and sharing experiences with farmers are just some of the activities you can experience in this action program.

The 'At the Coast' day, hosted at the NMDC, offers  a range of activities held in and around the water.
