West coast demersal closure

Soon it will be time for recreational and charter fishers to give the demersals a break in the West Coast Bioregion – the two month seasonal closure for demersal finfish will start on Friday, 15 October, until 15 December (inclusive). The closure is part of a recovery plan, check the Harvest Strategy for more information.

During the closure you cannot fish for, take, bring onto land, or be in possession of demersal finfish on a boat within the West Coast Bioregion. If you accidentally catch a demersal finfish from a boat or from shore in this area during the closed season, return it to the water immediately with the least possible injury to the fish using a release weight.

There are plenty of other fishing options at this time of year, including rock lobster, pelagic and nearshore/estuarine finfish species.
