A fisher has been fined more than $19,000 and banned from fishing for two years after being found in possession of 255 abalone.
Fisheries and Marine Officers were conducting a targeted operation and had earlier noticed the fisher fishing in an area of the Marmion Marine Park that is off limits.
Waterman Recreation Area, which is located within the marine park, has been generally closed to fishing for nearly 50 years and has signage in the area clearly identifying that fishing is strictly prohibited.
All reef life, including abalone, rock lobster, crabs and other shellfish are totally protected in this area.
This area is particularly important for abalone research to help in determining the total capacity of the metropolitan abalone fishery.
Due to the large quantities of abalone involved, the fisher was convicted under trafficking laws.
