Peel-Harvey MSC reassessment

The Peel-Harvey Estuarine Fishery for sea mullet and blue swimmer crabs, certified as sustainable by the globally recognised Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 2016, is about to enter re-assessment for the first time.

In preparation for this, our Ecosystems team has liaised with stakeholders to understand the risks of fishing to a range of ecological components. This is known as an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) and considers bycatch, protected species, benthic habitats, and the broader ecosystem. We have also reviewed and updated our harvest strategies for the estuarine and nearshore finfish and blue swimmer crab resources in our state’s South-West. Although work on refining social objectives for the recreational fishery is still ongoing, the current updated harvest strategies have been published as new Fisheries Management Papers: http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Documents/management_papers/fmp303.pdf and http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Documents/management_papers/fmp304.pdf.
