New future for Fisheries

The Department of Fisheries will become part of the new Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) on 1 July 2017.

The new department will bring fisheries together with the departments of Regional Development and Agriculture and Food, and staff from the Regional Development Commissions.

The formation of the new department is part of the State Government’s commitment to create a more efficient public service.

Department of Fisheries Director General, Heather Brayford, will take on the role of Deputy Director General Fisheries in the new agency.

The current Director General of the Department of Regional Development, Ralph Addis, will be Interim Director General of DPIRD.

Ms Brayford, who first joined Fisheries in 1986 and has been Director General since 2014, said the department has a long and proud history serving the WA community, and our State's fishing industry can be assured it is going to be business as usual from tomorrow.

“The move to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is not the end of our story - it's a new chapter and an exciting opportunity to build on our legacy and continue to deliver great outcomes with the same passion and professionalism we have shown over many years,” Ms Brayford said.

Ms Brayford said all Fisheries staff look forward to continuing to work with WA’s world-class fishing industry as a part of the new department.

“Our fisheries management work is highly regarded and respected here in WA, across Australia and internationally - and this will not change as we move forward,” she said.

During the transition all departments will continue to provide their regular services and information through their websites.
