High cost of illegal fishing

A seized recreational fishing vessel will be displayed at various locations around the North West as a reminder to fishers that they risk losing their boat and fishing gear for serious fishing offences.

A highly targeted campaign, named Operation Bagana, was undertaken over summer to draw attention to illegal fishing and gear tampering activities which have been prevalent in the western rock lobster fishery.

This vessel and its trailer were seized and forfeited to Fisheries, and its owner was fined tens of thousands of dollars for a range of recreational fishing offences, including interfering with other fishers’ lobster pots.

The seized vessel, the centrepiece of an education campaign across the South West of the State, is now heading north to continue to share the message during the busy dry season.

The boat will soon be displayed at various boat ramps and event locations around north west WA, including Port Hedland’s Spinifex Spree and FeNaCle in Karratha.

Anyone who has information on illegal fishing activities is asked to call FishWatch on 1800 815 507.
