Fisheries science in focus at free public event

Our free Science For Sustainability event at the State Library on Wednesday 13 March will provide fishophiles and science buffs with the chance to learn more about what we are doing to ensure there are fish for the future.

The seminar, part of Sustainable Seafood Week, will feature some of DPIRD’s leading fisheries scientists sharing their expertise about sustainable fishing in WA and the methods and technologies being used to support sustainable fisheries management.

Working with the Western Australian community, our primary objective is to ensure our fisheries and their habitats are sustainable.

With an expanding population, changing environmental conditions and advancing fishing technologies, there is an increasing challenge to ensure our fish resources are managed in a sustainable way.
And with increasing consumer expectations and a growing demand around sustainably sourced produce, we are taking a lead role in helping the commercial fishing industry move to third-party sustainable fishery certification.

Sustainable fisheries management is also a key element in protecting the enviable reputation of recreational fishing in Western Australia.

Launched by the Marine Stewardship Council in 2018, Sustainable Seafood Week aims to encourage sustainable seafood choices among Australia consumers, with this year’s theme 'Sea the Future'.

Representatives from the Marine Stewardship Council, Recfishwest, the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council and Austral Fisheries will also be participating in what promises to be a night of engaging presentations.

Light refreshments will be provided after the seminar, which runs from 6.30pm until 8pm at the State Library of Western Australia.
