Celebrate Sustainable Seafood Week in WA

​Western Australians are being encouraged to tuck into to some of our local sustainably-caught seafood to support Sustainable Seafood Week which runs from 12-18 March.

WA will be joining the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)  to celebrate Australia’s first ever Sustainable Seafood Week, set to end on a high with the 20th annual Mandurah Crab Fest this weekend.

In March 2000, WA's very own West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery became the world’s first fishery to be certified by MSC and was certified for the fourth time last year.

Since 2000, WA has achieved MSC certification for WA rock lobster, Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay prawn trawl, Peel Harvey Estuary blue swimmer crab and sea mullet, Australian west coast deep sea crab, the West Coast silver lipped pearl  fishery and wild-caught abalone.

This makes WA the only State in the world to have eight fisheries independently certified as sustainable.
