Abrolhos closure baldchin groper

From Sunday, 1 November until 31 January 2021 inclusive, fishing for baldchin groper in the Abrolhos Islands is closed

During this time, taking, landing or possessing baldchin groper within the Abrolhos Islands Fish Habitat Protection Area is prohibited. This closure protects this uniquely Western Australian demersal species aggregating to spawn near the Abrolhos as the water temperature rises during summer.

Baldchin groper are highly unlikely to survive catch and release fishing so it is important we avoid catching baldies during the closure to maximise spawning success and allow this important species to recover. The West Coast demersal scalefish resource (including baldchin groper) is currently halfway through a 20 year recovery plan and while there are some early signs of recovery, there is still a long way to go. A stakeholder based working group is currently developing a draft harvest strategy with the intent of releasing the draft in coming months.
