WA seafood stars take out national awards

  • WA wins four National Seafood Industry Awards overnight
  • The awards salute excellence in Australia's most vibrant and innovative fisheries
  • The WA seafood industry employs about 10,000 people State-wide

The Western Australian winners at the biennial National Seafood Industry Awards have been congratulated by Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly.

WA hooked the Seafood Industry Producers, Environment ,Young Achiever and Promotion awards at an industry celebration in Sydney overnight.

The world's first commercial abalone ranch, Ocean Grown Abalone at Augusta, won the Seafood Industry Producers Award, recognising the company's innovation and efforts to satisfy industry challenges.

Integrated commercial fishing company, Austral Fisheries, received the Environment Award, acknowledging its green credentials and efforts to become the first seafood business in the world to be certified carbon neutral.

Fremantle Octopus operations manager Asher Flynn won the national Young Achiever Award for his efforts to promote and market octopus as a premium quality seafood product to chefs and restaurants at home and abroad.

The Mandurah's Licensed Fishermen's Association collected the honour for the best seafood industry promotion in Australia and Albany's popular Ocean and Paddock seafood restaurant received a highly commended certificate in the judged fish and chips award.

Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly:

"Western Australia's seafood products are renowned throughout the world and for good reason.

"Our local fishing industry is celebrated worldwide for its sustainable credentials, and it is excellent to see companies, such as Austral Fisheries, taking the sustainable management of our industry so seriously.

"What Brad Adams and his team have done in Augusta with abalone ranching is revolutionary and will assist others to address industry challenges.

"It is also fantastic to see young people like Asher Flynn championing the industry to grow opportunities for WA. 

"The Mandurah Licensed Fishermen's Association have done an excellent job in promoting WA seafood and raising the public profile of our local produce.

"I congratulate all of these winners and I am proud of what they, and others, are doing in the industry to optimise the potential of the State's $1.6 billion seafood sector."
