WA could have Australia's best fish and chips wrapped up

  • Western Australia is aiming high in the 2018 fish and chips awards
  • The awards will help WA consumers support local fish and chips shops and fishers
  • WA has some of the world's best fisheries, underpinned by the best available science

In the first year of the National Fish and Chips Awards, a WA shop came second, so the challenge is on across our State not only to get to number one, but for Western Australians to show the rest of our nation that we have the best and tastiest seafood here in the west.

When it comes to our local fish and chips shops, the goal is to be either innovative or simply 'tried and true' in what they wrap up for customers.

The challenge for WA fish and chips customers is to get online and vote for their favourite at http://www.fishandchipsawards.com.au, or to follow the National Fish and Chips Awards on Facebook at #catchoftheyear.

WA fish and chips buyers know that fish from the west is best, so get behind your favourite shop and go online to vote and learn more about the awards.

As well as the people's choice awards, more than 20 judges are criss-crossing the country right now judging hundreds and hundreds of Australia's fish and chip shops to look for the tastiest meal, the best choice, the best service, information and presentation.

Voting ends on September 15, 2018 and winners will be announced on October 15, 2018.

WA has many wonderful and sustainable fisheries, including eight that have been independently certified by the renowned Marine Stewardship Council, and all of them work to supply fresh seafood to Australian and international consumers.

Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly:

"Western Australians love fish and chips whether it be for a beach picnic on a sunny day or a special family treat.

"What makes our fish and chips standout from other places around Australia and the world is our high-quality and sustainable fisheries that produce delicious seafood.

"There really is no doubt in my mind that fish from the west is best, so I'd encourage all Western Australians to support their local fish and chip shop, and WA fishing jobs, by casting a vote in this year's National Fish and Chips Awards.

"In WA there are plenty of fresh and tasty options, whether it be one of the snappers, some Spanish Mackerel, emperor from our North-West or West Coast fisheries or perhaps bronze whaler or gummy shark from the South Coast."
