Loan to enhance co-operative's export quality

  • Loan scheme to support Geraldton plant upgrades for rock lobster co-operative
  • Upgrades to underpin employment growth in primary sector

The Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative will install 442 tanks at its local processing facility to enhance the quality of its exports to live lobster markets in China.

The upgrades have been made possible by a loan backed by the McGowan Government, as part of a scheme supporting producer-driven co-operatives across the State.

A $3.4 million loan will support the co-operative to improve the Geraldton holding facility, upgrade the live lobster truck fleet and finalise the new Welshpool plant, which was officially opened by Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly last Friday (June 30).

The Co-operative Loans Scheme enables eligible businesses to grow their businesses through the investment in assets or capital items.

The scheme is administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, on behalf of the Western Australian Treasury Corporation.

Comments attributed to Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative is the largest rock lobster exporter in the world and is one of WA's most successful co-operatives.
"They have recently built the nation's biggest rock lobster holding tank facility, making it possible to air freight rock lobster to China and allowing customers thousands of kilometres away to experience fresh, premium Western Australian seafood.

"It is impressive to see a regional business, collectively owned by fishermen, go from strength to strength.

"This loans scheme is a prudent business arrangement but also an important way for the State Government to support local co-operatives, which underpin jobs and development in the primary sector and our regional communities."
