International scientists and experts to workshop rock lobster in WA

  • Perth to host 12th international lobster conference in 2020
  • WA's western rock lobster fishery has achieved sustainability certification once again

Perth has successfully won a bid to host the biggest international rock lobster biology and management conference in October 2020.

It will be the second time Perth, which hosted the inaugural conference 40 years ago, has hosted the International Conference and Workshop on Lobster Biology and Management.

At an industry meeting in Fremantle today, Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly congratulated everyone involved in Western Australia's rock lobster industry for continuing to provide a world-leading fishery that gives the State a positive international reputation.

The McGowan Labor Government is committed to maintaining WA's sustainable fisheries management policies and measuring them against the international gold standard in independent sustainability certification through the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

After being the first fishery in the world to achieve MSC certification back in 2000, and holding its accreditation ever since, WA's western rock lobster fishery is also now celebrating the renewal of its certification for a further five years.

Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly:

"Western Australia's rock lobster fishery is world-class and I'm honoured that Perth will again host leading scientists and experts from about 20 countries, when the 12th international conference is held here in 2020.

"Held every three to five years, the conference aims to generate and support international collaboration in lobster science and management.

"The conference provides an opportunity to highlight WA's western rock lobster fishery, which is valued at about $400 million annually and helps to provide thousands of local jobs.

"Our western rock lobster is highly regarded in international circles and it is brilliant to see it has once again achieved MSC certification for another five years."
